‘Amyloidosis Awareness Day’ passes out of committee

State Rep. Anthony Ealy (MHDC)

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Rep. Anthony Ealy, D-Grandview, celebrated the passage of two measures he sponsored to establish ‘Amyloidosis Awareness Day’ out committee Tuesday night.

Ealy’s House Bill 2591 and House Concurrent Resolution 46 would each create an annual day of awareness for amyloidosis on May 8.

“Raising awareness of amyloidosis is important because there’s a lack of education — even in the medical community — about recognizing its symptoms to receive proper treatment,” Ealy said. “I hope that in creating a day of awareness, more Missourians can catch the signs early in themselves or others so we can save and extend lives.”

Amyloidosis is a rare organ disease that results from an overaccumulation of the protein amyloid in internal organs. Eventually, this accumulation can lead to organ failure. The disease typically occurs in older adults and more often in men. Without treatment, it has a life expectancy of six months to four years. However, life expectancy can extend significantly with proper treatment.
