Rep. David Tyson Smith was first elected as a Democrat in April 2021 to represent part of the City of Columbia and Boone County (District 46) in the Missouri House of Representatives.


In the 103rd General Assembly, Smith serves as the ranking minority member of the Judiciary Committee, and sits on the committees for Elections, General Laws, and Administrative rules -- as well as the Joint Committee on the Justice System.


In addition to serving in the legislature, Smith is an attorney who has practiced law for approximately twenty years. He is a founding partner of the law firm Smith & Parnell LLC. Smith holds an undergraduate degree in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1996 and a Juris Doctorate from Tulane Law School in 1999.


Smith has been an active member of the Columbia community through various community and civil projects, and has served in several capacities regarding civil rights, including the formation of Columbia’s Citizens Police Review Board and an appointment to the Missouri Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. David was also involved in Columbia’s arts community by serving on the Ragtag Board of Directors.


Smith grew up in Columbia, Missouri, where he graduated from Hickman High School in 1991. Smith attends the Crossing Church with his two children.
