“The actions taking place in the Tennessee House of Representatives should enrage every American that values the democratic principles that serve as our nation’s civic bedrock. A Republican supermajority silenced and expelled three elected officials that serve as the voice and will of tens of thousands of citizens because they dared lead a wholly constitutional and peaceful protest about that supermajority’s unwillingness to confront gun violence.
“Justin Jones and Justin Pearson committed no crimes, incited no violence, and spawned no destruction. They deserve to serve the people who elected them, and the people who elected them deserve the service of those they chose as their representatives.
“We also cannot ignore that the two young Black men were expelled while the white woman was permitted to remain in the body of a state that had to be forced to end slavery. I am appalled and furious at the white supremacy on display in a neighboring state.”
